Last Stop - Rome

The Coliseum was built in only ten years, from 70-80 AD using slave labor and riches from Jerusalem, which had just been sacked and looted. It was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world and set the bar for all others to follow.

ROME

Your trip ends with a brief look at Rome's historical highlights. On arrival we check into our suburban hotel, the quiet and classy Hotel San Anselmo. This boutique hotel is located in a leafy neighborhood full of stately, large homes. James imagines that many of ancient Rome's elite lived up here on the Aventine Hill, one of the seven hills of ancient Rome. Within just a couple of minutes easy walk you can enjoy a splendid view over part of Rome including St. Peter's in the distance.

We check in and then take a taxi to the center for a walk around and look at some of the major sights including the Coliseum, Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and more. James is not allowed to drive in the historical center as this requires a special permit. So, we get around by taxis, which are plentiful and not expensive.

Dinner tonight in a family-run place near our hotel. We can walk there and back. We love this typical Trattoria for its homey feel, the friendliness of the staff (who seem to get friendlier with every bottle of wine consumed!) and the atmosphere, which is authentic Rome minus the trap for tourists.

DAY OF DEPARTURE - Wednesday, November 5
Flight Delta 241 departs at 10:15
Departure from hotel at 7:15 for the approximately 30 minute (normal drive time) to the airport, allowing half an hour for traffic delays which should be minimal at this time of the day.

Jim takes you to the airport. Ciao, til the next time!
